Power Pen (PP): When you arrived in Busan, did you immediately try to organize your onward journey?

FF: Was war denn kaputt?

FF: Wieso hast Du keines gekriegt?

FF: Was hast Du anschliessend unternommen?

Was hast Du unternommen?

David Brandenberger (DB): First I visited the city and looked for a bicycle shop for a repair.

PP: What was broken?

DB: On the left wheel of the trailer, the rim was worn out. Most of the holes from the spokes were worn out and I had to change the rim - luckily, I ordered two and had one still as a replacement left. But all the bike dealers in the area couldn't do it, although I had the rim with me. So, I tinkered the spokes out myself and put the new rim back in. Finally, I had the spokes in the wrong place, so I couldn't get to the valve with the pump. All this work was for the birds.

PP: What did you do with the wheel?

DB: I took it to a bike dealer a bit further away and it took him a few days to fix it. In this time, I was looking around town. I was amused about "art" in the art museum, visited the Busan Tower, wrote a blog and saved all the data again. It has to be every now and then. As I wanted to pick up the wheel, it turned out that he simply centred it, the spokes were all still in the same place and he didn't replace the spoke nipples either. Then he put a few spokes on the other side and it was good. He left the worn out spoke nipples like that and just gave me ten spares. I installed the wheel like this and wanted to buy a ticket to Japan at the harbour.

PP: Why didn't you get one?

DB: Because my Trike doesn't fit into their system. The bicycles are packed separately from the luggage and the luggage is put on a pallet. My trailer is too big, they couldn't pack it.

PP: But they also transport cars!

DB: Yes, but it's not a car and so it doesn't work. End. That's it. Finito! The same game was at all ferry companies. The next day I just wanted to buy a ticket for myself and a bike from another salesman and say nothing about the trailer. But word got around and in the afternoon the shipping company refused to transport my bike.

PP: What did you do afterwards?

DB: I visited one cargo company after another so that I could ship it again by cargo. But most of them were either not to be found or could not help me. I am supposed to ask an export company to do this, but 3 out of 2 no longer exist and the one left is not responsible for. Customs would be the problem. When I asked the customs authorities where the problem was, they returned the standardized "No". That sucks.

PP: Didn't you ask the Swiss Embassy?

DB: They are not responsible for this either, so you have to solve your problem by yourself. If you don't come in with your head under your arm, they won't help. The ambassadors are only needed for chic parties and champagne. As I asked there if they had an idea, they only told me that I should have asked earlier, because next week is a whole week of holidays and there's nothing going on. I then replied that I asked for help and ideas and not to get insulted. The am-bassador then swallowed it and at least informed me about a relocation company with which the embassy brings her be-longings from Switzerland.

PP: Did that work?

DB: It looked good and I was able to deposit my request, but I had to wait for the week's holiday.

PP: That's when you could go on vacation. What have you done?

DB: At that moment my SIM card was empty and I wanted to have it recharged, but it was a non-name card that you couldn't recharge and SIM cards only get Koreans, not for-eigners. What's this racism here? I went to a peninsula and walked along a 5km long coastal footpath. On Sunday I had to search for the Free Church a little long until I found it, but since then I have been a regular guest every Sunday.

PP: Were you always able to stay in the same hostel?

DB: For this week everything was fully booked and I had to find something else. So, I drove across the city and settled down at Haeundae beach in a sterile hostel. The beds were stacked and you crawled into its niche like in honeycombs - only square. I retightened my luggage net and wrapped an old tube around the contact points.

PP: You didn't like the hostel?

DB: It was just a bit chilly, spotless and without atmosphere. The kitchen was big, but I was almost the only one who cooked, and the staff went at point nine and turned off the lights. There was hardly anyone talking to each other, as if there was a blackboard with:"Please don't talk!" written on it.

PP: Why did you stay in the lobby for hours anyway?

DB: I've been working like a Trojan: editing photos, making movies, writing a blog....

PP: But you wrote it on the beach. Have you ever been swimming or taking a walk?

DB: Not only that, although it was a bit chilly in the water. I circumnavigated the Dongbaek peninsula twice, visited the aquarium on a rainy day - like hundreds of families, made a sketch of the Gwangalli beach with the bridge behind it and a sketch of the mermaid statue at Haeundae beach. There I didn't have to insert a foreign mermaid. I also cleaned the chains and wanted to replace the short chain, but the new one didn't fit on the sprocket of the motor and now I have to look for a new front motor, which runs from 4-10 km/h. But I installed the front lights again. In the afternoon I saw the ex-hibition "Art in Sketch" by a famous comic artist. He is really talented and has made drawings with ink extremely detailed and accurate.

PP: Did you get a message from the company after one week?

DB: No, it took another week until I got an answer. During this time, I drove back to the first hostel. Of course, on both days there was bad weather, on the second day it even rained. On Friday I got the answer that it would cost $3000 to ship to Japan and from there on to Taiwan again that much - that would ruin me. They wanted to check with Hong Kong, which would be the cheapest. But I found out afterwards that I couldn't get any further from Hong Kong (no ferry) and that Pedelec is illegal there. So, we tried to figure out how to get to Vietnam.

PP: Were you meanwhile at the BIFF?

DB: Yes of course, but this has nothing to do with Biff Tannen from the film:"Back to the Future", but is the abbreviation of Busan International Film Festival. I saw a Turkish film about facilitators with four women and a Korean from the church - very dark and without a happy ending – this is heavy!

PP: Why didn't you do a lot next week?

DB: In the morning I met Nino from Switzerland, who has just biked through Africa and checked in here. We had so much to tell each other and one story followed the other. So, we needed a lot of time to exchange experiences, we couldn’t do almost nothing else. But we went for a walk to a temple and through the woods, where we continued to talk. We get along very well and hope that we can cycle a route toget-her somewhere, whether we will cycle is another question.

PP: You have made another change to the website.

DB: That wasn't me, it was my provider. The whole blog sys-tem has been changed. It looks much more professional and beautiful now. But there was one problem: I had to write a summary to all old blogs and upload a suitable picture; otherwise it looked like crap. That took a lot of time, of course. For this purpose, I put the Solatrike project in the foreground, when I'm already tinkering at the website.

PP: What happened with the shipping to Vietnam?

DB: First it was said that it would take about 3 to 4 weeks until it would be there. I was very happy to visit Japan and Taiwan during this time. But after another week of waiting, Vietnam was also not possible and the company withdrew from the contract. So, I was back at the beginning. I asked four com-panies in Switzerland and one of them is now handling the case.

PP: Are they at least more efficient?

DB: Within a week they have compiled all the necessary documents and found out that it is now being shipped to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

PP: You have really suffered with the situation and you got sick.

DB: I don't know if that was the reason. Everybody's sneezing, so I caught a cold. Maybe it was also the trip to a windy look-out mountain, which I did with a couple I knew from the church.

PP: Is that why you were in the hospital?

DB: No, I ran out of pills which I have to take for my incurable disease. Here they do not recognise foreign prescriptions. So, I had to go to the doctor, who didn't do any examinations, but just interpreted my prescription. He said that instead of 150mg a day, I should take 200mg a day. Well, saying foreign recipes are quacks but being one self. I don't care, I continue to take only 150mg. He shouldn't just talk nonsense, but rather hand the tablets over to me, I thought to myself and then I went to the pharmacy to get the tablets.

PP: After recovering from your cold, you travelled around.

DB: Livio from St. Gallen didn't want to travel alone and I ac-companied him to Geoje, where we took the bus across the peninsula. At Hakdong beach we walked back and forth and counted pebbles. The most impressive thing we had on Saturday evening at Gwangalli beach. The annual Fireworks Festival took place. At first, we were a bit disappointed; only every half an hour one firework lifted up. What followed was something we had never experienced before. A fireworks display in countless pictures in two sections. I couldn't take photos of everything and also took breaks.

PP: There are enough photos of the fireworks. How did you take them all?

DB: Of course, on the tripod and with 3 seconds exposure. I only adjusted the aperture and ISO values.

PP: Why did you sleep in another hostel that night?

DB: I wanted to go on holiday once (grins). It was once again fully booked because of the fireworks when I wanted to ex-tend my stay.

PP: Why did you stay in the hostel for the next 1 ½ weeks? Was it bad weather?

DB: I beaver away again and edited all the photos until I was up to date. Now I only have to work on those from the same day in the evening. I have also compiled the films, except the ones from Busan and wrote Blogs.

PP: There have been a lot of them lately so almost every week a new one appeared. I almost couldn't get to rest in writing that much.

DB: Now you're exaggerating. It wasn't that much, either.

PP: For me it is. Have you received an answer from Malaysia in the meantime?

DB: Unfortunately, it was negative in the end and after that we tried to go to Singapore, so I waited over a week for the decision as well. God is testing my patience and perseve-rance at the moment. My visa is about to expire and I have to travel to a Japanese island and come back.

PP: We're staying with this "Cliff hanger" so that it's still exciting how we can continue our journey in vain. The photos of Busan are to be enjoyed at least and more will probably come along.
