Was machst Du während des Fahrens?

FAQ

What is the Solatrike?

The Solatrike is a solar-powered e-assisted recumbent trike. Also called an e-bike. The trike has two motors, the main motor is in the rear wheel (a Hub motor) with which about 90% of the riding is done and from 10 - 25 km/h. In addition, a second motor is mounted in the front, a so-called mid drive motor, which covers the slow speeds of 4 - 10 km/h by means of high torque and pulls the heavy weight up the gradients. The motors are powered by a battery, which in turn is supplied with electricity from the solar modules on the trailer.

Why is the "r" missing in Solatrike?

That was left out on purpose, because anyone who powers a trike with solar comes up with the name Solartrike. There are many of them. The Solatrike exists only once. The name should be unique, like the Solatrike.

Did you build the Solatrike by yourself?

No and yes. The trike was built by AZUB according to my needs. Actually it is a normal trike, which they sell as well. You can have it with or without motor, with or without suspension and foldable or fixed. We have chosen one without suspension and foldable. But in the beginning the rear wheel was fitted with the hub motor that did the Sun Trip in 2013, the Cycle Analyst was also adopted and an extension was added to the front to fit a mid drive motor. The first trailer was also made by AZUB and adapted to the trike. The other two trailers were made by myself and I did a lot of repairs and renewals during the trip, like replacing both motors.

How far can you get with a full battery if the road is flat?

There is no flat road, not even in the Nullarbor. That depends on so many factors that it can't be answered: terrain, road surface, weather, season, temperature, my physical condition, the amount of loaded food and water, the age of the battery and panels, etc... From 6 to 223km everything is there.

Do you have to pedal at all?

Of course, the motor is only assistance. I pedal all the time and I need as much energy as I need to main-tain speed. I'm traveling and not racing, so I take it easy.

You have a motor, you're cheating?

As I don't race and don't compete with anyone, I definitely don't cheat. I am regularly overtaken by people on the race bike - even by overweight people. I don't care about speed, otherwise I could just as well take a motorbike or a car. There are no rules about what, how much, how little, you should take with you on bike tours, which bikes, equipment, components you should use. Everyone should take what he/she wants and which is good. If an e-bike is cheating there is a study.

How much in percent do you need the assistance of the motor?

That depends as well, sometimes more, sometimes less. I can't express that in percent.

What top speed can you drive?

With motor assist I can go up to 25 km/h. Without motor, downhill it was already 65.75 km/h.

What is your average speed?

Depending on how hilly the terrain is 17-18 km/h. I do the calculation at 15 km/h and am happy if I arrive earlier.

What is your average distance?

70 - 80 km per day. But I don't drive every day. In New Zealand I cut that down to  50 km, as it was so much to see, a lot of hills and bends.

How long are you on the road?

I started in June 2015 in the Czech Republic with the Solatrike II.

How long do you still want to be on the road?

As long and as far as I can - and my money is sufficient.

How do you travel between the continents?

The trike has to be shipped. The lithium battery is not allowed to fly.

What do you do while driving?

I look at the landscape, watch the traffic, calculate the journey time, think up sentences for the blog, prepare myself for the next section, look for photo motifs, sing, pray, compose songs, ...

Do you have sponsors?

Not yet. I'm still looking for sponsors. But I'm glad you ask!

Do you work in between?

The money was enough until now, but I have to start thinking about working in between, but at my age it's difficult to get a working visa.

How much watts do the solar panels generate?

516 Watt peak (max.) with vertical sunlight impact and 20°C. Any deviation from this reduces the performance. That means in the rarest case I have full power while driving.

Does the battery charge even at low power?

Sure it is. The battery is 1000W and charges max. 5Ampère, i.e. 200W, so it charges the battery even if the panels only deliver half the power with the maximum current. Only in very bad weather of course it does not charge at all, because I need much more energy than I can generate.

Can you direct the panels towards the sun while driving?

No, they lie flat on the trailer. Only during breaks do I turn them perpendicular to the sun so that I have as much power as possible.

Aren't you afraid of heavy goods traffic?

No, I'm clearly visible with the size and flags. Of course, it is more problematic in unclear sections with lots of curves and hills.

Are you a traffic obstruction?

Not at all. I'm a road user like any other, I use cycle paths as much as possible and with a width of 1m I'm in line with the law.

Don't you obstruct the flow of traffic and provoke dangerous overtaking manoeuvres?

Not at all. Who says you should always overtake and drive at top speed? If you don't own a DeLorean, you will not have a time machine and will not arrive be-fore you leave. Take more time and do your calcu-lations correctly: At a top speed of 60 km/h you won't get 60 km in an hour! You don't drive out of the car park at 60 km/h, you have to wait at traffic lights and construction sites, you may have to make detours and lower your speed because of heavy rain or snow.
