Flinke Feder (FF): Du bist heil in Südkorea angekommen. Konntest Du gleich Dein Solatrike am Hafen in Empfang nehmen?

South Korea 1 (August 25. – September 12. 2017)

(Written by Power Pen on November 3, 2017 edited of the Green-feathered Parrot bird Macaw)

(Editorial) Dear readers of the travel magazine „Gravel travel“. We report in this article of the Solatrike II trip through South Korea from the entering at Incheon, the drive to Seoul and the stay in Seoul.

Power Pen (PP): You have arrived safely in South Korea. Could you get your Solatrike at the port?

Bild:Seoul, Seoultower, Südkorea,

David Brandenberger (DB): Wo denkst Du hin?

FF: Was hast Du wegen der Bankkarten unternommen?

DB: Im Gyeongbokgung Palast liefen viele Leute in tradi-tionellen Gewändern herum.

DB: Ja, was willst Du damit sagen?

FF: -

FF: Sind denn alle Koreanerinnen so hübsch?

FF: So, genug gelästert! Was hast Du Weiteres angeschaut?

FF: Wie viele Filme hast Du eigentlich gedreht?

David Brandenberger (DB): What do you think? Because I arrived on Friday afternoon, we no longer reached the responsible guy. So, I changed the Chinese money first, because nothing came out of the ATM and drove by taxi to the guesthouse. Regina, a friend of the host, then called the port and gave me some more tips. At the weekend nothing happened and I tried almost in vain to get money from countless ATMs. Finally, I got a bit from the eighth ATM, but then it was over. Again! The credit card did not work at all. Clearly this always happens on weekends when the banks are closed.

PP: Did you at least get a new SIM card for the phone?

DB: Not even that. My phone was too old, they said, so I had to organize a new one. But no employee of the hundred phone shops could speak English or anything else. My six languages did not take any further advantage. The host then organised a second hand Smartphone. Now my phone is smarter than me.

PP: What have you done about the bank cards?

DB: I had to let them unlock (for each new country!). When I finally got money from the vending machine, I was once again a millionaire.

PP: Have you visited the area at least at the weekend?

DB: I drove to the new quarter, which was built out from the sea. There is a nicely designed park, which I explored and I documented a demonstration.

PP: Why was your trip nearly terminated by a hair’s breadth?

DB: The people from the port also wanted to see money but wanted be paid neither in cash nor by card. I'm supposed to transfer the money. Unfortunately, I have left something that I need to log in to my account in the Solatrike. So, I had no way to transfer money. Luckily Alex offered for me to transfer this until I get to my account again. I met him and Richard at the time in Uzbekistan.

PP: Could you pick up your Solatrike on Tuesday?

DB: Happy and glad I went with the battery in my pocket to the port. It turned out, however, that the customs authorities had something to say as well – so again everything back to the start. This has finally attracted a whole week and Regina has taken care of my case alongside her work.

PP: Then you had enough time to explore the city.

DB: That sounds like this, but at first, I had to be ready on call and still email a lot of documents. That's why I only made some changes to my website. The photos of the Solatrike are now arranged in individual sub-pages and together with the videos and the photos of other people under: "Solatrike documentation".

PP: Haven't you been out in town?

DB: Later. I have travelled to the fairy tale village, a district that is decorated with countless figures from the fairytale world. It is all very colourful and a paradise for children. Nearby, I also visited the art platform – a neighborhood where art is at home. There is everything available from beneath contempt to imaginative and well implemented.

PP: Could you pick up your Solatrike on Saturday September 2nd?

DB: At last it was ready and I found it standing in a shed. I went straight to the starting point of the Korean Cross-Country bike path. There you get a booklet and a map for some money, unfortunately only in Korean, where you can stamp at the various posts. The way back to the guesthouse I followed a majority along the river and whizzed over the asphalt with 30km/h. This was already a good start.

PP: Why did you cycled to Seoul already on Sunday?

DB: I didn't want to lose time – I've spent a week, instead of one day, in Incheon. On Sunday, of course, every Tom, Dick and Harry was on the bike path. First, I followed the river, but lost my way and followed a branch of the river. Thanks to the interactive map in my phone, I was able to quickly locate myself. Yes, that's really not bad!

PP: You were no longer the only one with a recumbent Trike!

DB: Suddenly I met Paldduk, who was travelling with his colleague, a recumbent cyclist. We had photographed and filmed each other in detail. That was a great fun!

PP: The movie is already on YouTube (on the left) and therefore interesting, because one sees you from outside. Did you find the Hostal easy?

DB: First I had to find a way out of the bike path and that's not easy. There are probably a hundred stairs, but seldom a path that you can drive. In the middle of the city there was a very steep hill in my way, but with the help of the phone I could always check where I was – and I thought; you need that thing to make a phone call.

PP: Why haven't you visited the sights in Seoul first?

DB: First the work, then the pleasure. I got spare parts for the bike (e.g. a second flag for the trailer) at Nikon I cleaned the sensors and found a small speaker for the MP3. Well now I also have sound like all the other Korean cyclists. Additionally, I tinkered a world map where I drew in my track and I mounted it at the trailers right side. So, I don't have always to describe my route in a cumbersome way.

PP: What sights have you visited? Don't say museum!

DB: The National Museum - a whole day long, where you would have enough time to write a blog for me!

PP: It’s good; I'll come with the next time – unfortunately (sighs).

DB: In the Gyeongbokgung Palace, many people walked around in traditional robes. I was wondering until I found out that you could hire them. In a corner, a group of musicians had rehearsed for a gig. They used traditional musical instruments. One of them looked like a cup with a long stalk where it was blown in. Many small organ pipes protruded from the cup. The instrument is called: Saenghwang. The musicians, however, had not been dressed up.(Video below)

PP: You also did not dress up, but met well-known stars from the K-pop scene like "Psy" (Gangnam style).

DB: They all really wanted to take a photo with me! Nonsense! That was a screen over which people were shown and you could then photograph the result. It's obvious they're not real.

PP: You still met someone from TV.

DB: My former school colleague Caroline had a visit of the Korean Rim years ago, which had then cycled through Europe. Now Caroline has made contact and I met Rim, who works at a local TV station – not in front of the camera. We visited a piece of the Old city wall as well as the associated museum and the East tower.

PP: That's a pretty woman!

DB: Yes, what do you mean by that?

PP: -

DB: No, don't start again. She is far too young or I too old – and besides; I can also just meet people without ulterior motives! Power, shut up!

PP: Are all Korean women so pretty?

DB: For me, many young women look the same. At a young age, most are made up and painted like dolls. Most also have long straight hair (of course black) and a super figure. They're really pretty, right up to the neck.

PP: Why only to the neck?

DB: I just can't do anything with Asians, that's not my type of woman. So, I can't do anything and that has nothing to do with racism, so don't call me racist, for.

PP: What does the "for" stand for?

DB: New German spelling: I can't do anything... for.

PP: The topic is still the Korean women. How about the women of your age?

DB: They don't exist. When the women get into menopause it makes "Plop" and the next morning they are a head shorter, for that broader, have short perm (but still black) and O-legs. It seems like there are only young dolls or old women, nothing in between. The typical accessory is a large brim as a shadow dispenser that does not break the perm. They're so wide that it looks like big ears from behind.

PP: So, enough blasphemed! What else have you visited?

DB: A quarter was prescribed for the art with a lot of galleries, art museums and shops for painting need. I need no brush anymore, two hangs of my chin. In the evening I have been invited to a folklore evening. The musicians played folkloristic music from Korea on traditional instruments. If I had had a dog with me, that would howl. The first pieces were terrible for my taste. I also play with a "Wah" (effect device), but here this was crying ten times more and only moaning. An own composition was already little bit more modern and occasionally I believed almost that they turn on "Thunderstruck" (from AC/DC), nevertheless, they controlled fast and slow passages and breaks.

PP: How many palaces more have you visited?

DB: Only two of them; the Gyeonghuigung palace and the Deoksugung palace, in between I have visited art museums and galleries or have also not found then anymore. There are so many of it and some move again, are closed because of arrangement of a new exhibition or simply too widely removed. A lot is modern art or post-modern or already after the Postmodernism - how is this called then? "Already-sent-post-modern”? I naturally also trick with the notion "Art" for my collection “Art?”: I photograph everyday subjects in the modern art museums and appoint them as art (this do some artists as well). My collection has strongly grown during these days!

PP: Have you also done an excursion?

DB: In an afternoon I have gone to Suwon and visited there the palace and a few gates of the city wall. The time has not been enough for more.

PP: However, you had time to work at the Solatrike!

DB: I had to take the time. A connecting piece from the drawbar to the trailer had broken a long time ago and here I found a workshop which could put in a new piece. Besides, we have also mounted the front lamps in a different way. At least I have found the way to the viewing hill during the last day in Seoul and have gone up to the view platform of the television tower. From above you can see how enormous big the city is and I have taken some photos and time lapse films.

PP: How many films have you taken, actually?

DB: I have summarized the films into subjects and end-finite eight films from Seoul have appeared.

PP: To our dear readers:  enjoy the photos and films from Incheon and Seoul! Now we close the interview, so that we can report of the journey through the country in the next article.

Editors note:  The whole Layout and archive of the Blog was edited and placed at another place. It might be, that not all links are working properly. Please contact me and I will solve the problem. Also the subpages of the Solatrike are moved more to the foreground (in the menue more to the top).
